Instructor-Trainer Workshop

This course prepares qualified instructors to teach instructional skills to others.

If you currently use contractors to teach your courses, or if you send your staff to open-enrollment courses to learn instructional skills, you may want to have the capability of conducting your own in-house instructor training.

Or, if you are currently using internal instructor-trainers, you may want to upgrade their skills.  Most instructor trainers were good instructors who volunteered, were selected, learned on the job, and do their best, without the benefit of professional training.  But, because “people teach as they were taught,” they tend to use the limited repertoire they experienced in their own training.  Therefore, most internal instructor-trainers would benefit from a chance to learn new and better ways to do their jobs.

This workshop is unique in that it is the only known source of such training.  While many outside contractors or open-enrollment instructors are capable of training instructor-trainers, to do so would be to create their own competition.  When a firm provides its own instructor training, it no longer needs outside contractors or open-enrollment courses.

Who Should Attend and Why

  • Staff who are assigned to be instructor trainers.
  • Instructor trainers who need to refresh and expand their professional skills.
  • Training managers who want to be able to recognize, assess and support high-quality instruction.

Instructional Process

This workshop is customized to exactly meet the specific needs of your company in terms of the people attending it and the content they are responsible for.  The course is made up of two components:

  • Content-Free Microteaching® teaches how to cause error-free learning, and to focus on the planning, teaching, feedback cycle.  Four and one-half hours are devoted to this on the first day.
  • “Real-content microteaching” (RCM) in which the content the instructor-trainers students will teach on the job is the basis for all the practice teaching.

The course is configured around and taught in conjunction with the Instructor Skills Workshop and, like it, uses the instructional process described in Teaching Practice Format.

Training materials

The Instructor-Trainer participants are provided with instructor guides, participant manuals, Content-Free Microteaching materials, overhead transparencies, and assessment materials that are required to teach the Instructor Skills Workshop themselves.

Participants are also provided with a diskette with the participant manual in MS Word to enable them to customize the the manual for their organization.
