The classroom layout and instructor training process used in all three classroom teaching workshops are described below. Experience shows that if an instructor teaches only three students, the same skills will be practiced as if teaching a whole classroom. And, this enables the rest of the class to use diagnostic instruments to analyze and evaluate the teaching skills that are being practiced and to learn vicariously. This format is very efficient and effective. The roles and activities are rotated among the trainees. A. Three
trainees act as students (shown at a table with computers in front
of B. One trainee teaches the lesson (shown in front pointing to a transparency). C. One trainee who has finished teaching is viewing the tape of her presentation (shown wearing head phones and looking at a TV monitor). D. One trainee is taping the presentation (shown behind the camcorder). E. The remaining three trainees are viewing the presentation (shown comparing it to the lesson plan and their anticipated presentations) and completing critique forms. F. The
course instructor is observing the presentation and preparing to suggest
improvements in delivery (shown completing a critique form).
As the trainees practice teaching, observe others teaching, participate in critiques, and visualize how they will teach the lessons and manage the instruction, they increase their confidence and competence in providing error-free learning. And, as they practice coaching and critiquing, they learn to give feedback to their students in such a way as to make them motivated to use what they learn. |
